Peak

By: Roland Smith

Reading level = 5.0

Pts. = 9

Genre = Realistic fiction

          I've read many books by Roland Smith and by far this is my favorite. Peak is about a boy that has an aptitude for climbing. Peak gets caught climbing a building illegally and gets arrested. Once Peak gets released, his dad ( who he hasn't seen him in over 5 years ) takes Peak to climb Mt. Everest with him. This book takes you on the adventure Peak and his dad takes. Peak is 14 and if he reached Mt. Everest's summit within two weeks before his birthday, he will be the youngest person in history. I recommend reading this book.

Realistic Fiction

            This is a realistic fiction book about three kids and their mom. Matt, the oldest of the three, always protects his two younger sisters; Callie and Emmy, from their mom, Nikki. Nikki is cruel to the kids and gets drunk all the time. She always abuses her kids even though she really loves them. When Matt and Callie sneak out to get popsicles one night while Nikki was out on a date, they heard a man yelling at his kid for buying candy like he was about to hit him. That was when a big man stepped in, grabbed the little boy, and set him behind him. Once he had talked to the father and told the kid that nobody had the right to hit him, they left. Matt knew that he wanted to know that man. That man’s name was Murdoch. After the long drawn out process of searching, he couldn’t find the man who was in the gas station that night, and he gives up. For his birthday, Callie gives Matt a slip of paper that had an address on it. As Callie tells him that it is Murdoch’s, Nikki comes in, grabs the paper, and ends up setting up a date with him. At first, everything was perfect.  Nikki wasn’t as abusive and was actually trying to be nice. As time went by, Nikki ended up swinging Emmy by her ankles over a stony cliff by the ocean. Murdoch breaks up with Nikki and Nikki goes back to her old horrible self. Many more accidents occur, some of which risk their lives. It’s then that Matt realized that they couldn’t live with Nikki any longer. He calls his dad and tries to talk but he was no help. Read the book to find out if Matt, Emmy, and Callie can escape Nikki’s fiery grasp and finally live a good life.

Diary of Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
by:   Jeff Kinney

READING LEVEL = 5.2
POINTS = 3.0
GENRE= Realistic fiction

I've read every Diary of a Wimpy Kid and I really think this one is the best. Dog Days is very funny. Greg thinks he is going to have a pretty good summer but when Rolly takes him on their family trip, he is bored to death. Well, Greg finally says he wants to do something other than reading a book, so he tells Rolly's parents to take them to the board walk. Greg is really excited because there is a ride on the board walk called the “cranium shaker” that Rodrick says, "If you go on it, you’re a man!”   So, Greg went on the “cranium shaker”, and he is getting shook all over the place. So after that, Greg is as nauseous as one could be. That’s just one of the adventures Greg goes on in his summer. Pick up the book from the library or a book store. I promise you will have your nose stuck in the book until the last page.
